The advantages of the mechanical and bio-chemical properties of technical ceramics are as well disadvantages for the processing procedure. Due to their extreme hardness, ceramics are mechanically almost not cuttable. Even to produce contours or holes chemically you need extremly toxic and unhealthy, concentrated acids. The high thermal energy of conventional laser processings causes the breaking or the bursting of the ceramics.
The use of ultrashort pulse lasers is the solution for the processing of technical ceramics. The removal and drilling of ceramics with an USP laser is similiar to the processing of metals or other easy workable materials. The laser drilling and laser removal with an USP laser allows the selective vaporisation of ceramics withou the formation of micro fissures and detruction of the material.
