The structuring of plastic surfaces is almost made with the injection moulding process. Depending on the required size and geometry, different processes for the tool production are possible. For example machining procedures like micromilling as well as the eroding and the lithography combined with electroplating (LIGA). The low surface roughness, the small reachable sizes and the maximum of geometry flexibility and material flexibilty are significant advantages of the laser structuring technology.
The production of 3D moulding tools for the micro injection moulding that can generate replicative processes such as injection moulding and shaping of plastic components with designed surfaces, entails a sigificant amount of time and effort. In addition, the long processing time and the high costs prevent an individualised and felxible design. The use of ultrashort pulse lasers with minimal thermal impact and melting free processing leads to completely new possibilities for the production of tool inserts that have sigificant effects on the production flexibiltiy.
